"La Serenissima" is for sure a city made out of theatrical sets, so hard to believe that really exists, having the feeling that the producers will tear down the scenes after the end of the play.
Venice ,"The Floating City" is simply unique ! Full of history and culture, you will not have a spare moment in this city, since they are so many places to visit.
Book in advance a quided tour in Doge's Palace, a palazzo which has been characterized a masterpiece of art. Built in Venecian Gothic style back in 1340, it houses the Doge's apartments, courtrooms, offices, shiny halls and rooms full of art by famous Italian artists as well as hidden and dark cells just below the roof ont he upper part of the building. Giacomo Casanova whispers can still echo up there , while his famous attractiveness mirrors on the waters of the canals below.
Through the Palace you have access to the main prison building on the other side of the canal to the East ,connected by the infamous Bridge of Sights (Ponte dei Sospiri) !!
Everything reaches perfection, and while you wait in the countryard to get in (in the case you have already booked entrance to the building so you won't have to wait in the endless queue outside), you have time to admire the statues surrounding you.
But what is Venice without the gondolas !
Get in a gondola and let the gondolier who can sometimes be a real opera singer, offer you unforgettable moments while peacefully rowing within the city's narrow canals.
Some things in our life are priceless..
Tip: instead waiting in the endless queue for the campanile in San Marco's square, you can alternatively pay a visit to San Giorgio Maggiore, the small island across the San Marco's docks. With an entrance fee of 6€ you can use a lift to go to the top of the campanile for a panoramic view of the Lagoon and Venice!
Easy access with Vaporeto line2, just 5 minutes from San Marco stop.
Venice's museums and palazzos are countless, and certainly all of them are worth a visit. And since this can sometimes be impossible due to short stays ,it is always a good excuse for you to return to this place where echoes from the past can still be heard in the present.
The Naval History museum is an interesting museum with impressive exhibits in an area not so crowded on the East side of the city. Entrance ticket 10€, Vaporeto stop "Arsenale". Make sure you do not skip the area after the museum visit. Scroll around, in Via Giuseppe Garibaldi you will discover beautiful squares, gelaterias and coffee where you can mingle with the residents.
Few steps behind Piazza San Marco (to the north) is a smaller piazza almost hidden, where the theatre of San Gallo stands.
You will find only a couple of coffee shops making it the perfect pit-stop for a cold drink just a few meters away from the Square before you continue your journey through the narrow streets of Venice.
Hint: feel free to wander everywhere, following any random narrow alley without using any map and let yourself get lost in the maze of the city. This is the way to discover the true Venice away from the crowds and feel the heartbeat of the city through the aeons.
Every step you make, every chiesa (church) you visit, every single bridge you cross will lead you to various masterpieces of Art.
Afterall the whole city itself is piece of Art.
...while it's a fact that no picture taken can render properly the magnificence of "La Dominante". That is why , you have to visit this city at least once in your lifetime.
And although I have visited Venice plenty of times already, I will always find my way back to "her"..
Take a deep breath and let yourself be a part of the most beautiful "theater". And I can promise you that noone will remove the props of the theater scene after the encore. Because it IS real...
